[Hudson Leick as Callisto in Xena, Warrior Princess]

She was awesome as Callisto. But no, absolutely not to her being a better Eowyn. Miranda Otto was perfect.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I agree, Miranda Otto was wonderful.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed! She was just the perfect blend of steeliness and vulnerability.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I thought Mirando Otto's look and acting was fine, but she didn't sell the swordfighting scenes for me. It was in the way she moved... like she never put her full weight into a swing or anything like that. I know you're not supposed to really hit people hard, but you're supposed to look like you are. Never got that from her and it made the whole battle with the Witch-King slightly anticlimactic. :(

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
It's funny because she got a lot of praise from the stunt team for not being a natural swordfighter but working really hard and dedicating herself to it.

I agree. I guess I'm so used to actresses having shitty fight scenes and fight choreography in movies it didn't even stand out to me that much. :(

Yeah Miranda Otto was really good and I'm comfortable assigning any problems I had with the character to Peter Jackson. Eowyn was not even close to being of the biggest problems with the movies for me.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
Eowyn isn't supposed to be a crazy hot badass goddess type though?

+1

Methinks op is missing a point

Exactly. She's...solid. That's the best word I can think to describe her.

Exactly. Hudson was amazing as Callisto and maybe she could've been a decent Eowyn (without the 'crazy hot badass goddess' bit), but I'm more than happy with Miranda Otto.

My thoughts exactly - this is what I came here to say.

I was going to say pretty much exactly that.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm not sure what you think Eowyn is supposed to be. The actress may be good but if you think that Callisto should be a basis for Eowyn, then I don't think you really got Eowyn's character.

I do have some minor issues with the Eowyn portrayed in the movies but that was mostly directorial in my mind and what PJ chose to emphasize in her character. Eowyn should not be like Callisto.

You seem to be comparing apples and oranges. Hudson Leick was perfect for Callisto but Eowyn was a completely different kind of character and Miranda was perfect for her.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
If you wanted a better Eowyn, you'd be better off replacing the writers/director. Miranda Otto had to fight them to allow Eowyn to be anywhere close to the cold and stern woman from the books. I still can't get over how Peter Jackson thought 'lol Eowyn can't cook!' was more important for the EE than Eowyn fighting in caves during Helm's Deep.

yeah, that was kind of stupid.

I'm late with this because I didn't have time to comment before I went to work, but I'm going to reply anyway, for my own benefit.

I write Eowyn-centric fanfic and would have loved to have seen her battling orcs in the Glittering Caves -- in fact, I screen capped the glimpses we got and wrote the missing scene. But, as I was writing it, I realised what PJ must have realised when he was editing the film -- if Eowyn had fought at Helm's Deep, there would have been no excuse for Theoden and Eomer to behave as they did in ROTK, no need for Eowyn to disguise herself as a boy, no opportunity for "I am no man!", which is one of the pivotal moments of the entire trilogy.

Also, the scene with the soup isn't really about soup, or about her lack of cooking skills, it's about Aragorn's Numenorean heritage and about Eowyn's doomed love for him.

But, isn't Eowyn NOT supposed to be hot bitch? I see her more as someone who wanted to be on par with her male peers and would therefor not use her sexuality as part of her persona. Also, Hudson is better at the whole "crazy-erratic" part, though it does pain me greatl she didn't seem to get many parts after that.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 01:18 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know about the sexuality part, but I thought the film version of Eowyn could've used more "bitch". More passion, more fight, more really going for it on the battlefield.

These two characters are not remotely similar in personality, backstory, or anything beyond both being portrayed by blonde, white women. WTF are you on about?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-27 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
I loved Callisto. I wanted to give my future daughter that name. I also felt for her unrequited love for Ares. :/

Text: She’s [Callisto] still my favorite example of a super hot crazy bitch goddess. I think she would’ve made a far better Eowyn than her.

Daaaw, I love Miranda Otto. Tough and tender at the same time!

Plus she worked her ass off in that role learning how to fight with a sword.
