Depends on what you need and what your preferences are! We can always recommend laptops for whatever uses.

Alright, here's what I'd like:

-sturdy and will last a while
-looks nice, so I'm not big on thinkpads
-not prone to overheating
-more desktop than portable
-i don't do any high level computing or gaming so doesn't need a lot of processing power
-medium size screen
-less than $600

Based on your description, I've found you a few heavier laptops that have somewhere around a 15'' to 17'' diagonal screen, all Windows 7 OS (to avoid touch screen Windows 8 bugginess), with a fairly standard amount of RAM and space. These are all computers I've used before although not necessarily owned before (I used to work in the university IT department), and there are a variety of brands.

HP has the Pavilion 15 (~$580) and Pavilion 17 (~$520), distinction mostly about the size of the screen. The Pavilion 17 is cheaper due to being heavier and having a smaller hard drive in the default model (500GB vs 750GB.)

Dell has the Inspiron 15 3000 Series Non-Touch (~$400), which I find slightly less attractive than the HPs but pretty equivalent otherwise. Most of the reviews, however, say something along the lines of "great budget laptop," so I wouldn't expect it to last forever.

Acer has the Aspire 15.6'' (~$360), which--being honest--is pretty ugly, but that's an Acer thing. They tend to be good computers otherwise, and this one in particular is one of their more portable ones (although still heavy for a laptop.) Acers are overall less expensive than some of the more name brands, so if the budget is the biggest issue, I'd go with Acer.

I've never had good luck with Lenovo. Not to say they're bad, but their laptops have never worked out in my favor, sorry to say, and I've never really encountered many Samsung laptops. I'm sure someone else can help with those brands!

Seconding Acer Aspires. I have one - albeit a more powerful model than the one listed here - and I love it.

I personally don't care for Dells.

As a techie (as in someone who gets paid to fix busted computers), no. Do not, do not. All three of those brands are just asking for trouble down the line.

Don't be stupid, they're all solid brands. Ime, nearly all computer issues are people related, and I have both an HP and an Acer that have each lasted me nearly ten years.

No, they were solid brands. Cheap components and half-assed construction don't make for a machine that lasts. They're just fortunate that computers have become cheap enough for the basic deal that most people upgrade them as often, if not moreso, than they do their cell phones.

What brands do you recommend?
