I believe it refers to the tendency of men to sit with their legs spread and take up extra space on the bus because their balls are in need of breathing room. Tumblr has elevated this into a species of microaggression.

Speaking as a guy who actually can sit comfortably with legs crossed lady-style (especially when I was thinner), I have to say...

I don't think girls entirely appreciate that having testicles is very different than having a vagina.

And yet, when they want to travel by air, men somehow manage to tolerate being squeezed into those 17-inch seats in economy class, and for several hours at a time at that. If they sprawl all over the bus--and stick their legs out in the aisles--it's because they can.

This, seriously. You can take up less space in a seat without sitting "lady-style"; there are methods of sitting besides just crossing your legs or spreading them as wide as you can.

yeahhhh I might have believed that before I visited Korea and Japan where the trains are full and nobody encroaches into anybody else's space... and astonishingly the men are quite capable of sitting with their legs together.
Also there was that male friend of mine who used to sit like a normal person, and then got it into his head that he needed to be more 'manly' and wow suddenly his balls need space.
So yeah, maybe the anatomy's a bit different, but it really boils down to assholery imo.

Indeed. In Japan it's considered polite to sit with your legs together (for women and men) and crossing your legs is actually considered masculine behaviour (I've been scolded multiple times for crossing my legs because it's rude/crass for women to do so). So I think it's pretty much a cultural thing, personally. I think guys saying "but the balls!!" are kind of full of it.

Well, just for me, I'm a bit wider than the average dude, but my experience is that while I can site with my legs together it is pretty uncomfortable. Yes, my balls get squeezed, but a bit of pocket billiards can fix that (although I did on one occasion get a bit of shit for rearranging. Not a constant thing, most people just pretend they don't see, but one crazy fucker was like "Can you not touch your genitals in public please" at the top of her voice)

My main problem is balance. Legs apart I am sturdy enough to stay steady myself against the bus's movement. Legs together, which I can do if someone I don't know is sitting next to me, and I am wobbling all over the shop.

Final factor is again comfort. Sitting legs apart is easy and requires no muscle work. Sitting legs together means I have to physically hold my knees together. Possible, but uncomfortable.

Have you considered that it's just practice and expectation? I mean women and hundreds of millions of East Asian men manage to balance just fine.
I honestly don't think that the minor effort of 'physically holding your legs together' justifies being a nuisance in public spaces. Especially when 3/4 of the world's population manages just fine.

It is kind of gross to grab your balls in public, dude.

But I mean, almost everyone has to physically hold their knees together? It's not as comfortable as letting them spread apart, but we do it as a courtesy to those around us. Most people do many things in public that are uncomfortable for them, but make the people around them more comfortable. It's part of existing in society.

Hey, I find it uncomfortable having my ass grabbed on the subway, but sacrifices must be made to the gods of public transit. On the other hand, if your patriarchal knees are taking up half of the seats on either side of you, you are, in fact, what's wrong with the whole of society and should be culled immediately lest your genes be spread to future commuters. Also, get your damned ablist backpack out of my face and take your cis-privileged food wrappers with you when you get off the train.

Funny thing is: I see less men spreading their legs than women spreading their shopping or just their gigantic bags and purses over all adjoining seats. But if you took pictures of that and spammed them over the internet, you'd get tons of people whining about misogyny.

On the other hand, I only see men claiming that they inherently need more space on public transit because of the pain of compressing their junk and the hardship of maintaining their balance with their knees together.
