If I never have someone clutching their pearls about me NOT being outraged by weird kids on tumblr, it would STILL be too late.

Seriously, guys, tumblr is not the world. It's seriously not that huge an influence on the society around me. I care about homelessness, abuse/abandonment, social services, and mental health education. I really do not have the time or energy to be upset about some kid who isn't doing anything to me except existing.

I agree.

At the same time, I think tumblr gets a lot of mention here specifically because it has such an enormous influence on fandom.

I know that a lot of tumblr treats social justice as a fandom, but still! Not the same!

(Mac actually goes to a local church which is mostly inhabited by much-older gays and lesbians who've been fighting the power since the 70s and 80s. It's been really interesting just listening to them talk about the struggles they've faced and still face now, and how that compares to the struggles we hear from younger folks.)

I really don't need to see another link to a random tumblr with a kid being weird that implies that all the Kids These Days are like that again.

Yeah, especially since, had I come out as young as these kids did, I would surely have been derided as a sparkly tumblr teen too. Gay trans multiple with poor social skills and a host who believed in magic? Yeah, we were EXACTLY like those kids who get mocked.

As unpleasant as the isolation was, sometimes I think it was a GOOD thing that we were in denial and hiding till adulthood.
