Amy's death was heartbreaking, and SO damn unfair (talk about inopportune timing), but the creator of the show said he didn't see Amy's death as the end of her story, so even if she wasn't supposed to return from the dead (again), something was supposed to happen with her. Going from the scripts that have been released, it almost seems like her being saved was a possiblity.

And that's another thing that sort of makes me think, "While this show deserves another season, maybe it would be okay to leave things as is." I enjoy headcanoning that Amy comes back one day, and that Kieren and Simon eventually move in together and are happy, and that Philip's mom and the doctor get together, and Jem works through her PTSD and Kieren's dad simmers down and goes back to being obsessed with Blu-Rays. The characters are so excellent, and they deserve to be happy. This show is very much NOT happy, and while it's a brilliant ride, I almost would hate for the characters to have to suffer more.
