Oh, I used to be very paranoid. I wouldn't even reveal what gender I was, and was consequently mistaken for a dude.

But yes, I'm a native Russian speaker and Moscow's where I spent the majority of my life (though I no longer live there) :)

What's Moscow like to live in? (If I may ask)?

Sure! Moscow is... well. It's very nice in some regards and pretty horrible in others. I've a great fondness for the city, and I do miss it a lot. It has some beautiful architecture - I think its churches are the prettiest. At the same time, unlike St. Petersburg, it doesn't have a system of laws that'd allow to keep whole districts worth of old buildings intact, and sometimes the pretty churches get surrounded by unspeakably ugly skyscrapers.

It's pretty polluted. I used to be sick all the time when I lived there. But at the same time it has these quiet small streets full of greenery (e.g. the Old Arbat) where you really forget how dirty the city is. And then, of course, there are the gigantic parks - for example, the Losiny Ostrov National Park, basically 116 sq. km of trees. I used to go skiing there. And there are real mooses living in it.

Certain parts of it are dangerous to walk in, especially after darkness; though it may also be that I'm not a terribly cautious person and I tend to get myself into trouble. At any rate, I'm accustomed to carrying a knife at all times. I did, I confess, feel safer when I moved to another European town.

It's absolutely gigantic. I don't really perceive it as a continuous whole, but as something of a discrete entity. Some districts have nothing in common apart from being connected by the Moscow subway. (speaking of the Moscow subway, it's one of the most mindboggling places I've seen in my life. It's like a network of palaces randomly shoved underground).

The political situation is... bad. Well, you've probably heard about that. There are some things happening right now that are causing me considerable anxiety.

Economically, it's not very badly off; expensive, but the wages tend to be higher than in other places. However, there are many immigrant workers (from countries such as Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan) who are treated appallingly and who are given way less money than any working human being ought to be given.

It's very interesting and eclectic! But it's also a lot of trouble and heartache.

Wow, that's quite an answer, thank you! I'm interested in visiting someday...but yeah, the political climate scares me :( And stuff tends to blow up around me as it is.
