I liked Dragon Age 2 because when a scenario came up that was obviously going to cost me a character if I disagreed with them, I could go ahead and do that. It wouldn't cost me, the player, to lose them.

Yeah, this. You could still lose characters in various ways, but if you got them 100% either way, and if you did their personal quest, they'd definitely be loyal to you no matter what.

What, Sebastian? Ohh yeah I couldn't bring myself to kill Anders, and Sebastian's fit over that made me want to slap him. Nghh.

Exactly. Worst DLC character ever. I hated the Chantry, so actually was right pleased with Anders when he blew it up. and either way, I'm generally against killing any of the companions. Sebastian leaving was so obnoxious when I'd done all his quests and worked him up to 100, and apparently that meant absolutely nothing. I'm not sure he even has a "crisis" where you can lose him in any other way, so besides stat boosts, friending/rivaling him completely is useless.
