Well, yeah. People do a bunch of stupid shit because "that's how we've always done things! this is the thing that we, the in group, do!"

(yeah, lawns are stupid and a waste of water)

But, really. Don't be surprised if people get mad. It may not mean you're racist, but it can mean you're rude.

People aren't always asking that you hold their beliefs as sacred. (If they ARE, that's kind of shitty and they should be discouraged from that.) But if people are asking for respect and to do their thing in peace?

Yeah, you should probably just let it be. People will continue to water their lawns because they think it looks nice. As long as they're not pushing you to get some astroturf, stay off their lawn.
