Exactly. I like Sherlock just fine, but I agree that the "style over substance" argument has merit. The problem with some diehard fans is that they mistake "show that I like" for "show with substance". I'm okay with liking a show that's weak in plot and substance because it's just something I enjoy watching, not a condemnation of me as a person.

Yeah. I've never understood the need some people have to refuse to admit that anything they like isn't OMG the deepest, most meaningful and clever thing ever.

I mean, I watch Sherlock. I don't love it, but I like it enough to look forward to each new season. And to pretend it doesn't focus more on pandering and visuals than on actually clever writing and characterization (especially as it goes along) is laughable.

And the funniest thing is when it doesn't do that quite as much (ie when it actually tries to weave in as much substance as style) are when it's had some of its best moments. There's a reason so many people list "A Study in Pink" and "The Richenbach Fall" as in the top 2 or 3 eps. Those actually did some heavy character work, some earned dramatic twists and some legitimately clever plotting.
