The idea that gender and sexuality are constructed seems to have fallen out of favor, which honestly disturbs me, especially since men and women have been getting pushed back into traditional roles more and more in the past few years. There's a backlash going on, and a lot of people have been made complicit in it.

Going to second the backlash being disturbing, particularly in this case, since the objection is 100% contingent on the assumption that a male character is necessarily a man, and that she must necessarily by the wrong pronoun, regardless of how character (who uses "she") feels about it.

Getting angry about characters being misgendered by misgendering a character is never a great way to kick off any conversation, particularly when they the one getting offended by the premise!

In general, I agree with you, but I also completely understand how the OP's own experiences would make him nope the heck away from the book.

Oh totally, it just seems bizarre to me that he noped the heck away from the book after the first few chapters, as opposed to simply noping away based on the premise. Nobody gets misgendered in the first few chapters. Claiming that someone was necessitates assuming someone's gender based on their biological sex (the only thing we're told about the character in this case) which... seems like a pretty incredible thing for someone who openly states they're transgendered to do.
