TBH, I'd love to hear some of your ideas. I love world building like that. :D

Pft, I design alien species or conlangs. Ain't that weird, OP.

That sounds awesome, OP. I love fictional weapons.

You could always use them as artifacts in tabletop RPGs

or in stories

there's plenty of places for cool weapons

^ This. Wordy media lets the imagination of your audience do all the work for you.

Also, if you can even badly draw your designs, there's always the off-chance you can get someone more skilled (commissions, friends, etc.) to draw prettier versions.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-29 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think that's terrible. There's a long tradition of having weapons with backstories and such, so you're in fine company.

OT - I was so irritated by what they did with Diablo 3. Diablo may not be the best game series out there but it's one of the few I've had time for and kept up with. I don't play online and never have; I'm not that kind of player. So, I was really irritated that you could ONLY play it online now. Never bought the third one. Don't have a console (I think they finally released it for console now) so can't play it like that either. I highly dislike this new online-only trend, though I know I'm in the minority. :(

Oh, that sucks! I had no idea. I played it on console and it's quite fun.

I hear you, anon. My Internet connection is pretty good... when it works. Unfortunately it likes to randomly shut down for no good reason.

That's really cool OP, I'd love to hear about your ideas.

That sounds really cool, OP. Wish I could do that.

I do this too, OP. I might write them down anyway. Do enough and something might form of its own accord.

Image: nine fantasy-style weapons from Diablo.

Text: I think up legendary weapons for non-existent video games in my head: how they would look, what they’d be named and why, what the backstory is, which hero wielded them etc. I basically make up short stories in my head centered around a weapon that doesn’t exist.

b!s: I couldn’t draw to save my life, so I could never even bring them to life and show them to people.

I think I might be a bit weird.

Alright, let's do this. Left to right:

Ancient Bonesaber Of Zumaklis
Azurewrath
Devil Tongue
Wildwood
Griswold's Masterpiece
Skywarden
Sun Keeper (design anyway, although it's not coloured right)
Nutcracker (ditto)
Nailbiter

I've lost track of how many damn Wildwoods I've had. (And it's Diablo 3, for the bothered.)

I do the same thing, sort of! Mine's slightly different-- I take characters from video games that aren't shown fighting at any point, and plot out how they'd fight/what weapons they'd use/etc.

I've definitely done a few legendary weapons in there too, with full backstories and everything. :D I think it's great, it's a wonderful creative endeavor. Maybe if you're not so great at drawing (I'm not either!), you might have some luck with 3D rendering software? I find it's easier to manipulate shapes into forms I like rather than having to actually draw something out.

Why do you need to draw them? You have stories in your head. Those stories are better served by words than by pictures.

Write the short stories. Write the novel. Write the screenplay.

(Anonymous) 2015-01-29 07:00 am (UTC)(link)
That sounds like a really neat approach for a collection of short stories. Borges reviewed books that didn't exist, why not talk about the armory of games that don't exist?

(Anonymous) 2015-01-29 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I personally feel that Menard's 'Don Quixote' is far superior to the Cervantes version, and that the literary corpus of Tlön is highly underrated. I would love to be able to follow debates over whether the Angels' Cleaver is better than the Bonegrinder of Karvh based on their stats, procs, and lore history...

[personal profile] anonymous4 2015-01-29 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds brilliant, OP.

(Other people spend their time writing stories centred around penises that don't exist).

(Anonymous) 2015-01-29 08:32 am (UTC)(link)
Oh that is super fun to do. I used to like designing fantasy weapons as a teenager. I would love to get back into that too!

You should write your ideas down and try drawing them! It's fun to make sketches of stuff even if you aren't confident of your skills just yet.

I sometimes do that too.

I made up a story of the sword that was once owned by Andraste in Dragon Age, taking a function of a canon sword in DA:O (Spellweaver - a sword that can be used to cast spells) and the look of a modded sword. It directly relates to my LotR RP, as we now play a timeline that has a DA crossover in the backstory, and that sword belonged to two of my characters (yes, one of them was Andraste).

That sounds really cool! It'd be awesome if you could team up with an artist and some game designers to make a game, since it seems like you find creative work fun.

I make up games in my head and I have no time to actually make any of them, so I totally know the feeling of dreaming up stuff that will never be shown to people. Impractical, but so fun and addictive, you know? :)
