Japanese hostage held by IS killed

(Anonymous) 2015-01-29 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
One seems to be alive for the time being. Unfortunately it looks like the expected has happened and will happen again. It's a tragic thing to see.

p.s. Please don't use this thread for Islamic apologism thank you.

I'm gonna drop this here, just because I feel like it.

The dead hostage was Haruna Yukawa, an unemployed wanderer who'd gone bankrupt, tried to kill herself*, and lost her wife to cancer in that order. She had no personal connection to the conflict in Syria, but she wandered in and joined up with the Free Syrian Army because she had nothing else to do with her life. She believed that she was the reincarnation of a famous spy, and she wanted to become a hero once again, to make this life worth something like her last life was.

The one who yet lives is Kenji Goto, a veteran reporter famous for his coverage of child refugees. His private life is largely unknown, apart from his publicized conversion to Christianity out of fear of "dying alone in a distant war zone." Publicly, he's well-known for speaking out against the human cost of war. If Yukawa wanted to be a hero, then Goto already is one.

Yukawa was briefly an assistant to Goto, who rescued her from a sticky situation shortly after she arrived in Syria. Yukawa considered him a friend, and Goto in turn seems to have considered her someone to guide and protect. When an FSA post was overrun, and Yukawa was taken captive, Goto set out on his own to try to rescue her. In his final video, he asked viewers not to blame the people of Syria if anything happened to him. "It is a pretty dangerous trip. If something happens, all responsibility is on me.”

What I'm getting at is that these two are both completely awesome, and they deserved better than to end up like this. I hope the hostage swap goes through and Goto goes free, and as for Yukawa, I wish her a peaceful rest. She died trying to do the right thing, even when she stood to gain nothing from it.

*Every news report I've seen uses male pronouns for Yukawa, but as far as I can tell, she identified as female.

I'm not entirely sure I agree with that.

Just because I think of a similar person, which is that guy from Something Awful who dropped out and went to Libya and pretended to be a doctor for the rebels there, and is now in a Syrian prison, and that does not seem awesome. That seems like an example of tragic mental illness, from his behavior and statements.
