I don't think I could ever use a snap trap, because someone in the news (I think it was Jon Carroll) wrote about the time he set one out. It's supposed to get them in the neck and kill them cleanly, but this one hit the middle of the skull, and you can imagine what that does. The mouse didn't die right away, either, struggling and trying to get out even though it clearly didn't have much longer left to live.

I still maintain that they're better than sticky traps. The mouse will get trapped in those and panic, sometimes tearing off whole stretches of skin in their attempt to escape. And then after being trapped for hours in pain, someone still has to take care of it/put it out of its misery.

I'm honestly not sure what's the best method... or if there even is a "best" method.

I've read about nonlethal mouse traps, though only in passing. Quick Googling brings up a metal box with air holes, which they can get into but not out of until you open it and let them out in some distant location. (Just make sure to check it frequently!)

Live traps (proper live traps, the box traps) are pretty good, so long as you remember to check them regularly so the poor mouse doesn't die of thirst.
