I'm not quite up to date with all the details but basically yeah, there's a controversy because the Women's World Cup is scheduled to take place on artifical turf fields and some women players are suing about it I think. And on the one hand I can kind of understand where FIFA is coming from, it is apparently difficult and expensive to maintain high-quality natural pitches in Canada, but on the other hand they're planning on playing the men's World Cup in fucking Qatar in the middle of summer and they're going to use real pitches for that so it's slightly absurd to say it's because of environmental factors.

As far as I know, they've now dropped the legal action because the governing bodies were delaying things and threatening individuals with suspension in a tacit bullying campaign to make sure they couldn't proceed.

Ah! I didn't hear that. Doesn't really surprise me though, since that seems to be a major component of FIFA's playbook (along with things like bringing corruption allegations against anyone who challenges Blatter).
