Computer/Gaming woes

(Anonymous) 2015-01-30 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
So I got 80 hours into Dragon Age Inquisition, and all of the sudden, the game starts lagging terribly. Occasionally it would have a minute or two where it'd go slow, but I had been playing just fine on Medium graphic settings, pretty smooth (though the loading screens were always long). But yeah, 80 hours in, and I'm getting six frames per second, even less.

Confused, I give it a day or two, but the problem doesn't sort itself out. I start poking around and notice I got a Code 43 on my graphics card, so Windows is saying it disabled it (presumably, that's what caused the problem, but I can't even be sure since I hadn't checked anything ever before). I try to update things, do everything I know how (which isn't much) and nothing. The 43 miraculously goes away at one point, but Dragon Age still was slow, and then the 43 went back.

Now I'm searching for solutions to problems that are WAY above my head. I have no idea what to do. I don't think anything updated recently because I'm supposed to get notifications asking me permission when anything updates, and I hadn't gotten those (though I tried updating everything after the problem, no luck). I don't really have the money or time to take my computer in. I only got the laptop five months ago, so presumably I should have warranty, but I'm also abroad for school right now and I have no idea if I can do anything about it here.

So frustrated, even though for all practical purposes it just means I can't play my game, but it's been my stress reliever lately, and instead it's just piled on more.

Sorry to rant, this was meant to be a computer complaining thread. D:(though if anyone has any advice that'd be greatly appreciated too)

I feel bad about even replying to this because I have no clue what the problem could be (the code 43 thing is confusing me, that's how hopeless I am about these things), but I hope you get it fixed. Maybe someone over at the dragon age reddit could help? Or technical support at BSN? (...I mean, probably not, but sometimes other players have fixes.)

Thanks for the reply, though at this point I don't think it's a Dragon Age problem, I think it's a problem with my computer. Though I'm hearing that a lot of people are having ridiculous lag problems with the game and it hasn't been playable, the fact that Windows has disabled my graphics card because of unidentifiable problems probably isn't a coincidence? Not that I know anything for sure, I don't know anything beyond the basics about computers. Online searches have come up with anything from "reinstall Windows" (which I don't really know how to do) to "get a refund" (which I'm not sure I can do, being abroad) so I'm pretty stressed!

the fact that Windows has disabled my graphics card

This is now my new nightmare. Maybe it IS the graphics card, but in that case I hope it's just the graphics card and not anything more serious. Er, though I know some people have had major problems with Dragon Age, I've not yet heard of anything of this sort.

(I had a red screen once, and what I assume was a memory leak, but other than that just normal crashes. I guess I've been lucky?)

I don't know how to reinstall Windows either, but I imagine if you needed to do that there would be an easy to follow guide online! (Not that I would believe reinstalling windows would be the answer, but, you know.)

Does the manufacturer of your computer have a tech support line that could try and help you troubleshoot?

If you pull up your event viewer, you should be able to find the data log for exactly what caused it to throw the code 43 on your graphics card. As for fixing that, if you haven't done it already (you said you updated but not sure how):

Do a search for your graphics card and download the newest/latest drivers for that one directly from the site (as opposed to letting Windows search).

Most computers come with (or have available) a diagnostic utility. Try a search for "[brand of laptop] diagnostics" on Google if you can't find it, and run that. That might tell you if your graphics card is going bad.
