Jane Austen

I just watched the Emma with Kate Beckinsale and Mark Strong. I've never seen any other version.

I know that the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice is mostly considered the best. Do any of Austen's other movie/TV adaptions have a "best" version? How does this Emma stack up to the others?

What are your favorites?

(Basically, geek-out on Austen!)

I've only seen the Gwyneth Paltrow version of Emma, but I love it. I also love love love the Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet version of Sense & Sensibility.

I like that version too. Alan Rickman and House were great.

Have you seen the 2008 BBC version of S&S? I liked some of the added touches to that one.

I haven't seen the BBC version of S&S. I guess it's worth checking out?

I thought it was pretty good. If you're a purist, there are a few liberties taken. I didn't think it was anything huge (there's a bit of a racy opening) but I know some fans disliked a few elements. Overall, it does cover more of the book than the movie and I thought it followed things faithfully enough. I enjoyed the cast very much.

I like the newest miniseries for Emma. 2008 or 2009 I think.

Not a fan of Gwenyth Paltrow, but admittedly that's my favourite version of Emma. Colin Firth/Jennifer Ehle version of Pride and Prejudice is my favourite version only because I love all of the actors and find them perfect for the roles, on top of it being very 'true to canon'.

Emma Thompson/Alan Rickman version of Sense and Sensibility is my favourite version of that for the same reasons as P&P, I just feel it was perfectly cast.

I think the best Elizabeth Bennett is Greer Watson in the 1940s version. But the only Mr. Knightley is Colin Firth.
