The problem wasn't so much that they vanished, but that they died: massive numbers of corpses everywhere, plane and other vehicle crashes, women pregnant with a male fetus suddenly miscarrying, etc. If 49% of the population vanished, it would probably be cleaner and easier to recover.

There were various places in the comics where the survivors had recovered pretty well.
