Being a shipper, even if it's your own characters, doesn't mean you plan to make it canon. And what does the point they decided to ask Nick and make it canon have to do with whether or not it was for brownie points? They didn't know Nick was going to take it off the air and make it web only until season 3, and they probably didn't bother asking while it was still on the air because they knew there'd be no chance. And of course knowing Korrasami had a lot of shippers probably did influence them into going for it. If you're going to do something risky like that, it's better to know you have support. Knowing you're going to get """brownie points""" from a lot of people for doing something doesn't mean you don't want to do it for other reasons.
