Personally, IRL it depend on WHO has the long hair, as to whether it looks good or not. If it's kept up, etc. Yeah, the biker with the long, greasy split ends doesn't look good, but I've known guys with pretty long hair.

And why? Because when you're designing 10+ characters, if you're limited to "short" styles (And by your inclusion of like...Mello, you want damned short) it gets pretty repetitive. Specially in a black and white manga, where your colors are white, gray, and black. Plus a good chunk of those character are influenced by history, and the styles of the time period it's in.

I see... you have a good point. I never did think about that. But there are still tons of hairstyles with short hair.

But the time period thing confuses me, I don't see many animes where they really have time-period appropriate hairstyles. *coughhigurashicough*

A GOOD artist can make you tell everyone apart (I'm not saying only bad artist use long hair, but you should be able to take away the hair and still see who the character is) but, on both ends...lots of artist don't, they just use hair to design people diffrently, and on the flip side, lots of readers don't pay close enough attention to the small details that set em apart. So you have to make the hair and clothes enough that people recognize them quickly and aren't going "Who the hell is that" and are instead focusing on your story telling.

Test some Narutard's some day, he's really good at making all faces look unique, and I doubt 85% of his fan base notices.

I have no idea about Higarashi (I thought it was modern, and what I saw looked modern, but...that is the one with the psycho little girls, yes?), but like...you have Hotohori, and he's some variation of ancient China. Kenshin, and Sesshomaru are probably pulling from it to.

Higurashi is supposed to be set in the 1980's, IIRC. Still modern for certain definitions of modern, but not quite present-day. (And yes, it's the psycho loli anime.)

Ah. Lik...I guess what I've seen can be 80's ish, but the only character I really "know" are Rena, who does have epic pig tail, the green ahired girl, and the boy with normal brown hair.

Colors aside, none of the characters has a really outrageous hairstyle or anything... then again, considering it's the '80s we're talking about, maybe that's exactly what the anonymouse thinks is wrong with them.
