I don't care about it being song fic inspired by even songs I do know. So long as the lyrics don't obstruct my view or induce a gagging fit, I'm good with whatever helped bring me reading material :)

On the other hand, I don't quite understand what makes song fic much different than a fic whose premise was brought on by anything else (irl, prompt, au, fanart, etc).

Usually it's more than the fic being inspired by a song. The really bad ones put the lyrics into the body of the fic, whether all in one chunk or throughout, and even sometimes have the characters say/sing them to each other.

I find that songfics tend to be influenced so heavily by the songs that were included in them that it distorts the authors' perspective on what is good and what is bad writing. In the author's head, a piece of their songfic may be emotional, but really it's the song that induces these emotions in them, not the fic itself.
