I mean, can you imagine a scenario where singing to someone in RL is something other than funny or romantic? Unless you want, like, Sweeney Todd, but even then there's pre-canon romance.

I can imagine plenty of such scenarios? Singing in musical is just an artistic convention. There are tons of these across different genres and media. Not everything that's unrealistic has to be funny or romance-centric.
