Re: I...regret...everything

I don't drink all that often, which is one of the reasons that I'm not sure about it. Because most of my experience with people who identify as alcoholics is hardcore day-after-day drinking. And the other major reason, probably, is that many of my friends also tend to drink fairly heavily from time to time, as do my parents, so it's normalized to an extent; it's hard to find the line between heavy drinking and actual problematic drinking, and none of them identify themselves as having a problem, so maybe I'm just whining.

I can go pretty long periods of time without having a drink. But the problem tends to be that when I do have a drink, a lot of the time, it just doesn't stop. Both socially and when I'm just on my own. Sometimes I can just have a beer out with friends but a lot of the time you just get into that state of mind where everything makes so much sense and you just feel good and you just want it to feel more like that and not stop. Sometimes you have a glass of wine with dinner and it's lovely. Sometimes you have a glass of wine with dinner and then you decide to have another. And then you have another and then a couple big glasses of whiskey. And it's more than I want to do but there's not anything I've really tried so far that's changed the fact that a good percentage of the time, when I start drinking, I really just don't want to stop, and can't bring myself to stop.

Thank you for the polite response, by the way. I'm sorry to lay all this heavy shit on you. And I'm glad that your sister is recovering.

It seems you have more of a problem with binge drinking than anything else. While this isn't ideal, it means you are less dependent on alcohol.

If you had not expressed concern over this, I would have not even considered this a problem. But obviously it bothers you. The only thing I can recommend is to avoid alcohol altogether when alone. And if you have a close friend to confide in (that you drink with), perhaps have them cut you off when you have a certain amount of drinks. Or, try and set yourself a goal (tonight I will only have one glass).

Thank you about my sister. Her drinking was connected to her depression. She has gotten help for that so the drinking has been largely eliminated.
