Specifically or in general? I can't speak specifically for the OP. But, generally speaking, sometimes the old guard can be very set in their ways and can make it very unpleasant for people who don't want to do things the old way.

Text: After running into the same femslash fandom people over and over again I have FINALLY found a femslash fandom none of the old guard are even remotely participating in.

I have never been so HAPPY in my entire fandom life.

I didn't know there WAS a femslash old guard.

But then again, my femslash pairing moves at a fairly slow pace, even though the fandom itself is very active. *sigh*

It would be depressing seeing the same names over and over again, making the femslash world seem very enclosed, but from what I've seen most femslash writers are dabblers like me and there's a churning through of new writers constantly.

I've written about 2 femslash fics in my life out of over 50 I've done. That's the standard pattern as far as I can tell. Most of my mainly slash writing fanfic friends have written femslash at some point or other.

But I do get the OP's excitement of being in a fresh fandom. I also find that liberating.
