I've heard that you're supposed to finish a draft, then shelve the manuscript for a few months. If you just constantly work on it then it becomes too much. Having a few years separating you from the book put everything in perspective.

What's the book about?

I'm way too impatient to wait years but I did put it aside for a couple months.

I posted an official-ish synopsis the other day, but the main idea is this: The main character has the ability to speak to the dead. A recent death has sparked a protest but the woman who died disagrees with the protest and doesn't want them using her as a martyr, so she asks the main character to talk to them for her. Meanwhile the main character is trying to figure out how she feels about the issue.

Hey, that sounds pretty cool, sarillia! (And also weirdly relevant to me, since I'm kinda at the epicenter of the Leelah Alcorn stuff and I have weird feelings about how dead trans youth get treated.)

Thanks! It's always nice to hear that other people find my ideas interesting too.

I can relate too. My big pet area is disability rights and there is so much talking over actual disabled people and "hey, you know what, I haven't actually talked to the people this affects, but this common saying kinda sorta relates to them so it must be offensive; I'm gonna start telling everyone to stop saying it without consulting the people I'm supposedly trying to help", just to pick one of the less infuriating examples.

Oh god yeah. Especially since a lot of disability shit is able-bodied folks trying to take over disabled folks "for their own good." Yech.

I encounter a lot of that in the multi realm, which goes in weird directions. I once had to post a debunking on tumblr going, "Guys, no. 'Multiple' is not a word only to be used by DID multis as a verbal safe space. That's total bunk. The medical establishment was using it in 1984. Here's the link!" Because I encountered some baby anons asking whether they were oppressing DID folks by calling themselves multiple.

It's like, guys, come on. There aren't enough of us to make it worth playing Multi King of the Mountain.

That sounds topical. How did the main character learn to speak to the dead? Or is it an natural talent?

I was playing around with a world where magical abilities are based on personality and it's a mix of nature and nurture. They are predisposed to certain personalities but their experiences can help shape them too and part of their education is geared toward figuring out what's important to them and how to become more like the sort of person they would like to be. I still have to figure out when exactly the abilities develop. The main character's power is an extension of her being a really good listener who makes people want to open up to her.

That's really unique and cool!

I'd suggest making the powers develop during middle school. That's when puberty hits and when a lot of people start questioning what they've told and what they believe.

Thanks!

I was thinking about making it about that age. I'm just randomly indecisive about weird details. :p

Someone to exchange chapters and feedback with. Someone to discuss the odd slump or idea or plot nugget with.

I haven't actually shared any of my original writing with anyone (except for a couple short stories years ago) because I'm a coward, but I've been wanting to try to jump that hurdle so I can actually do something with my writing.

I'll pm you my e-mail.
