Re: Popular Things in Your Fandoms that You Just Don't Give a Shit about

My beef with Bucky is that I feel like I never really got to know him.

He didn't have an enormous role in The First Avenger:

We see him in the beginning with Steve before he ships out.
Then Steve rescues him and they hang out at the bar.
And then he dies on the train and…that's about it really.

In The Winter Soldier, then, he barely had any dialogue. He just looked like a beaten puppy half the time.

And I think that's why I have so much trouble caring about him as a character -- I feel like the narrative treats him like Steve's DOG -- a best friend that I care about because of what he means to Steve and because he's adorable. But in and of himself, Bucky isn't compelling to me.

I haven't read the comics, though, so I can't speak to that.

No offense meant to Bucky fans though! I get how people could take a lot out of his scenes and relate to him -- I just don't.

The "beaten puppy" thing is why a lot of his newer (post-TWS) fans were initially drawn to him, I think. Fandom loves a woobie, and as MCU woobies go he underwent some pretty intense stuff.

Oh yeah. I don't deny that he is completely 100% a legit woobie (unlike Loki). But, to me at least, that's ALL there is to him. He's literally just Steve's beaten puppy. And while I think Steve's emotions surrounding that are interesting, Bucky's just read as flat and uninteresting to me.

But I get why he's popular. I just don't care about him personally.

Yeah, I prefer the Steve woobie. And Bucky is just meh to me. I can get behind some hurt/comfort with him. But only if Steve is around for it.

But, I also generally latch onto one character and stick with that one.

Yes! High five. I too prefer Steve woobie.

Maybe it's because his woobie-ness is so subtle.

I feel like he's perfectly described by this Ernest Hemingway quote:

“You are so brave and quiet I forget you are suffering.”

Whereas I find with Bucky, it just grates me because there's a tendency in a lot of fic to turn Steve into this unfailing pillar of stability for Bucky. It reminds me a lot of how Stony fics treat Steve -- like he's a big prize for another character that the fic is really about. And it bothers me because Steve is the one I'm invested in.

That's not to say that Bucky doesn't have legitimate issues (holy hell does he ever) just that I find too many fics address them at the expense of Steve, I guess. In my opinion.

I FEEL EXACTLY THE SAME WAY ABOUT EVERYTHING YOU SAID!

Some of my favorite fics address Steve's suffering (PTSD, depression, etc). And I can't stand fics that just have Steve being so calm about dealing with Bucky. Even a superhuman would suffer from caregiver burnout especially when dealing with all the shit that happens in TWS.

And one of the things I dislike about Stony is how often Tony is woobified. And I really have no right to complain because I love woobie Steve. But even fics where Steve is the one hurt somehow becomes all about how sad/miserable Tony is.

Can I just join the circle of friendship and Steve-love to just say YES to everything here? Though I'll admit, I feel like a bit of a hypocrite talking about wanting Steve fics when I haven't finished any.

I LOVE THAT GIF! :D

Agreed! So much!

Especially about Tony. Just, yes Tony was tortured in Afghanistan, and yes his father didn't tell him he loved him enough. But when you're trying to pretend that THIS man is the woobie in comparison to a man who grew up sick as hell during the Great Depression, fought in a goddamn war, lost his best friend, was forced to commit suicide, woke up 70 years in the future to find almost everyone he loved dead, found the woman he loved but she's suffering from dementia, and has just realized that the organization he worked for is the same as the enemy he sacrificed his life to stop.

Just…how the FUCK does that even compute?

I don't know! I don't know why Tony Stark whump is so popular. It doesn't seem like the solo Iron Man films are all that popular compared to Avengers fic. Yet, somehow Tony has gotten the majority of whump.

IT MAKES ME SO ANGRY! ┻━┻ ︵ヽ(`Д´)ノ︵ ┻━┻

It's the damnedest thing to me -- Tony and Loki likely had the easiest lives of all the MCU Avengers (certainly compared to Steve, Natasha, and Clint). Only Thor is really the exception. And yet they're the biggest woobies.

These posts have now made me angry. I am going to reread some Steve whump fic. RAWR!
