Only I would consider those kinds of things a secret. A lot of people don't feel comfortable saying these things in public and hide these feelings to themselves, perhaps for years. Isn't that the very definition of a secret?

Maybe, but the point is nobody can tell. How do we know whether this is actually a secret or someone that wanted to piss people off by going "SHERLOCK SUCKS/FEMALE CHARACTER IS A SLUT/FANS OF X ARE STUPID"? Because we've actually had that in the past and had people using this as a platform to do that, which is why stuff like that doesn't count any more - people have to put in at least a little effort to make it something personal instead of random insult flinging.

So your rule is if a secret's going to try to piss people off, at least be interesting about it? I kind of agree.

A lot of the secrets everyone calls troll on are opinions that I've actually heard other people express for real. Nearly every single one. Stupid secrets and real ones aren't mutually exclusive.

But you're right, nobody can tell. Thanks for sifting through all this stuff and making some kind of call on it anyway.

Stupid or not doesn't have much to do with it, actually! The rule is more like "it has to be unmistakably a secret or at least personal enough of an opinion to give reasonable benefit of the doubt that you aren't just using FS as a PSA platform for things you also tell people all the time and/or randomly making demands for fic/art"
