Image: Cadance Flynn and Linda Flynn-Fletcher, mother and daughter from the cartoon Phineas & Ferb. They're both redheads. Cadance is sitting down at a breakfast table being baffled while her mother stands next to her and looks on unconvinced.

Text: I normally like the mom. She's pretty cool. Except...

for her role in the main premise of the show! For fuck's sake, lady, just turn around! The humongous thing is right behind you! Your daughter isn't making shit up! I know it's humor, but come on! Does her husband never tell her about what her children get up to? No one ever posts about it online? It's never on the news she watches? SERIOUSLY?! It just pisses me off when parents don't believe their children.

And yet I watch the show.

Candace. Not "Cadance" which looks like someone misspelling the word cadence.

I tried watching it with some kids I babysat once. This was what bugged me about it too. :/

Omg I love how angry this makes you ♥
I kinda wish you could make Phineas & Ferb commentary or recaps, where you have to stop and point out the absurdity in children's cartoons & hearts;♥&hearts ;♥

IIRC, there is an episode that explains that if the mom ever actually sees what Phineas and Ferb are doing, their projects will no longer be around to accidentally stop Doofenshmirtz's own inventions from screwing things up, which leads to Doof actually succeeding in becoming the overlord/dictator of the tri-state area and the world. So, according to that episode at least, Candace has to always fail at alerting her mother to her brothers' antics for plot reasons - and, y'know, because if their mom grounded them, Phineas & Ferb wouldn't be a show anymore.

The mechanics of the show kind of keep the mom from turning around - there is always something to keep Linda from seeing the local news when it talks about P&F, or seeing a billboard or a flyer that's advertising P&F's latest invention, and Candace's unfortunately long history of having her look at an empty backyard every time Candace claims something else is there has probably made Linda super resilient to getting up and going outside every time Candace cries wolf (although we, as the audience, know full well she's telling the truth). The show even subverts this trope on several occasion with Candace joining her brothers on several inventions and using reverse psychology on her mom, although these in the end do not work.

Actually, now that I think about it, there is at least one episode in which Candace gets Mom to turn around and see what is in the backyard, but I don't think much comes of it. Sorry, I can't remember the episode title :(

I think, in the end, P&F suffers from something a lot of cartoons do: the adults are either not very bright or not actively involved in their children's daily lives, although for P&F, this is because of plot stuff, not because of any active lack of parenting skills on the parts of Linda and Lawrence. Although I do wish Linda supported Candace's activities as much as she indirectly supports Phineas and Ferb's. That ... sucks.

Although, now that I'm writing this reply, I think that Danville is one of those towns where weird shit happens all the time and the residents just roll with it, P&F's inventions included. It could be that Linda just can't see the difference between the usual Danville weirdness and the parts of it enacted by her own sons. It's like Danville is a child-friendly Night Vale and Candace is the lone suffering truth telling Steve Carlsberg, if that makes any sense (I don't know if OP knows WTNV :|).

tl;dr: thank God someone else overthinks/obsesses about the mechanics and detailed aspects of Phineas and Ferb too. Also, holy crap this comment got long.

The fact that the show relies on the trope of "oblivious parent doesn't believe child" as part of a major function of the show is why I loathe it, and why I dislike a lot of cartoons. It's possibly one of my least favorite tropes, and also one of the laziest in cartoons. It gets old and obnoxious really fast and makes me find the main characters annoying rather than endearing.
