*gasp* Even the Granada one with Jeremy Brett? Say it isn't so!

There's a whole clique of Brett-haters on F!S for some odd reason. I know, I don't understand it either.

EVEN JEREMY BRETT! Because I'm just that crazy.

No, Jeremy Brett does as well as can reasonably be expected, and I like the Granada series very much, but he still doesn't successfully carry off the character for me. There's something missing in the way of... activity, quickness, vitality, I guess, if that makes sense. I think I've said this before on here but I don't think the character fundamentally can be done on screen. He's just kind of superhuman.

To be fair, the active vitality thing was a lot harder for Brett to carry off when he was having bad bipolar issues and being treated with lithium, followed by serious heart trouble later on in his life.

I mean, I'm not angry at the guy. And, again, for what it's worth, I don't think that any human being could successfully carry off Sherlock Holmes. It's more a question of my impossibly high standards for the character than his failure.

I recommend you try the first series eps again, and if you're especially looking for activity, quickness, go directly to The Red-Headed League and the Second Stain. Jeremy Brett is healthy in those early stories, and he's feisty, funny, and brilliant too -- as close to the text as anyone has ever come.

IA. I thought Brett did a fantastic job of portraying Holmes' energy in the beginning. I still love the later series, but as the show progresses you see he's clearly not a well man. :(
