I honestly tend not to be into villains very often. I find the romanticizing of evil pretty repulsive, and most villains, if they're written miserable and pathetic, aren't the type you get really emotionally attached to.

That said, I did really enjoy Acheron Hades from The Eyre Affair. A dude who actually aspires to pure evil, untainted by greed or anger or personal desire? That's funny enough to actually strike me as interesting. I mean, he kidnaps Jane Eyre, PURELY so as to ruin the Jane Eyre fandom forever! That's great!

It's been a while since I read those. Didn't Acheron also have an evil sister? They were all a bunch of trolls too?

I stopped reading the books after book four, and the first was always our favorite, but I remember Acheron having a brother, Styx, and a sister, Lethe. There are probably more from later books that we never read.

Styx was a really petty troll, who'd go and steal people's left socks, go into music shops to scratch the records, that kind of thing. He didn't last long. Lethe would warp and destroy people's memories, but she just didn't interest me.

I think Acheron's appeal to me was just how good-humored he was about what he was doing. He wasn't doing it for some deep philosophical reason or out of some twisted traumatized psyche. He was enjoying himself!
