Re: Are you basic?

I feel old, I have no idea what this is about.

Except if we are talking about sciency terms? Or basic clothes? Is that a term you use in English? For tops that are a simple colour? Anyway I will lay this down as an ESL thing and go to sleep.

But I really do feel with Sebbie right now:

Yeah, ESL here and I don't get it either. Seems like very vague slang.

It's an idiomatic slang sort of thing. Generally meaning square or uncool, specifically meaning a certain stereotypical kind of young white female who likes very specific kinds of things.

Maybe it's American slang because I have no idea.

It's slang. It means boring, but it really mostly refers to someone who fits the stereotypes of middle class American white people.

Someone who listens to the most popular bands and wears the most popular brands for their demographic, maybe they have a super cliche trendy tattoo like "I refuse to sink" with an anchor or something. Not because they're intentionally trying to fit it, but because their tastes are so white bread that they think those things are cool.

(Note: It's not a term I particularly care for. Some of the most awesome people I've known have been 'basic'.)

I think tumblr uses the term for young white women/girls who like taking instagram pictures of their starbucks drinks (espescially of the soy milk or pumpkin spice variety), like to think of themselves as manic pixie dreamgirls but are actually ~boring~, tend to wear leggings and oversized sweaters and like music, books and movies that are mainstream and bland. Apparently.

In the end, it's just another way to hate on people who don't fit their made-up rules of how you should live your life and how you should not, but because the target is privileged white girls, it's totally okay lol. Ugh.
