Re: Do you have any disorders/disabilities?

"Depression and anxiety like everyone on these parts of the Internet."

true that. I myself have gone through pretty bad depression and anxiety, been on pills and have come a long way, so I'm not trying to be funny here. But why does it seem like everyone on the Internet says they have depression and anxiety? is it that people with depression and anxiety are more likely to use the internet? or is it just something that people are more comfortable associating with... because I'm pretty sure everyone in the world gets depressed and gets anxious at various points in their lives. maybe it's a societal thing.

Just thinking out loud and need to go to sleep, sorry.

Well, I think part of it is that we underestimate how common depression and anxiety really are. That's part of the explanation - there just are a ton of people who have serious issues with stuff like this. It's a lot of the population. But I also think that the frequency is specific to certain parts of the Internet - I mean, nearly everyone is online these days, but it's a specific kind of bloggy-nerdy-fandom-geeky set of communities that at least IME have this kind of profusion of people with depression. And I think at that point, it's basically a self-selecting thing. The kind of person who's interested in that kind of community also has a very strong tendency to be depressed, the same way that there's a profusion of introverts.

I think that certain parts of fandom do have disproportionate representation, yes, because it's basically escapism if your real life sort of sucks.

Depression and anxiety are the common colds of mental illness. Which is to say that a lot of people will experience them at some point in their lives.

I guess you could also say the sort of people who hang out in fandom/geeky spaces and spend more time on the internet, probably skew towards being introverted or shy or anxious people.

Imo experience irl, it seems most people at some point will have anxiety, depression or both. And the internet is a safe place to talk about it in a nice mostly non judgemental area.

But it does seem more common than you'd think. That combined with more opinion sharing = looks more obvious.
