I think the problem with the Hobbit effects is they tried to rely exclusively on cg and with LOTR they did have a few more camera tricks and practical effects. LOTR did not look that great cg-wise either but since there was less of it, there were still some shots that were gorgeous.

I much prefer movies that make more use of camera tricks, practical effects, models and makeup to movies that almost exclusively use cg.

Eh? I thought LOTR had amazing CGI work, mostly because they did such a good job of supporting it with physical sets and miniatures.
