I actually get a lot more scared by video games... because you ARE the player character and you can't run away from the monsters.

I'll line up with this. Gore in films upsets me too easily these days, but I'm incapable of playing horror games. Too much internalization. I really wanted to see the PT teaser game, but I made my partner play it. I still somehow managed to simultaneously kick the air and punch myself in the face when the ghost pops up behind the player. The last one I actually played? RE: Code Veronica.

Dogs burst out from under a house at me, I set the controller down and walked out of the room. Never touched that game again.

Oh me too, I CAN'T do horror video games at all despite the fact that I am fine watching most horror movies. But I get too involved in video games and feeling an attachment to a character like that makes it too freaky for me.

This isn't uncommon though, even my friends who can stand to play horror video games admit they find it a lot scarier then sitting down and watching a movie.

I get freaked out playing certain Zelda titles sometimes so horror games? Nope nope nope nope nope.

That actually makes it less effective for me. People talk about video games as inherently more immersive than other forms of stories but I just can't get too emotionally involved because I'm too worried about doing everything right.

Yup, most horror films don't do much for me (though I don't make it a priority to watch them either because so many look absolutely terrible) but give me a video game, even one filled with mostly jump scares, and I'll be swearing, sweating and noping out. I can finish things like BioShock and Alan Wake, but it's going to be a tough experience. (Shit, some of the jump scares in the original BioShock near 'bout killed me. Those damned statues in Fort Frolic are the stuff of nightmares.)

The only Silent Hill I've ever completed was Silent Hill 2, though. Those games just freak me out too much... (dat bathroom scare) The music and sound effects combined with the shit weapons just make them miserable for me to play, even if I think they're interesting and cool.

Oh, and Outlast? I would never ever play that game on my own. I just couldn't; I would make it about five minutes into the game, hide, then stay there for hours, too afraid to move. I watched a let's play and still ended up screaming in fear (and flailing my arms like an idiot) a couple times.
