Serious question - do you never look at the author's pic when you read a book? They can be hard to avoid.

I look at the picture at the end of reading the book. If I catch sight before, I put thay book aside and wait until I've forgotten what the author looks like before reading again. Most writers are quite dull looking so it's not hard.

I think Terry Pratchett's is the only author whose photo I can look at and then go straight to reading, but it took me a while even with him. Perhaps it's because he looks so approachable yet eccentric which is basically how I want all authors to look.

The worst are the really posed slick photos. They actually turn my stomach with a kind of fascinated revulsion.

I'm always amazed publishers so often put photos of authors on book covers at all. Surely there must be others whom it puts off. Even the mini bios are something I deliberately avoid until after the book is done.

when I started reading, we didn't have author's pics in novels. penguin paperbacks still don't have them afaik. ANd now that I think of it, back when I tried to read illuminati by dan brown it didn't either, nor do the ASoIaF paperbacks.

Pics are usually only in hardbacks, and now on the internet.

You're right, I grew up not knowing what any of the writers looked like and also often not even if they were male or female or what nationality they were.
