Ah, see, I'm one of those people that don't particularly care about something being a bit cliche or predictable as long as it's well done. Plus, I agree, she does a good job of making those things her own and as real as possible for the universe. I would find it easy to believe she was one of the first to explore those conventions considering how long the fic has been around; they don't bother me at all.

I don't even know what to say to that second complaint... Even if she were trying to sound more 'Tolkienish', isn't that the point?! It makes sense and doesn't feel off-kilter, IDK what more people want.

The point of rereading the Fellowship arc is to see it from a difference angle! There's a lot more going on than just the Fellowship arc when you consider Thorin's side of the story. I don't know what the author has in mind, but I wouldn't be particularly surprised if she kept writing about Legolas and Gimli after the quest is finished. There's lots to explore. (With the added benefit of Thorin flipping out over Gimli hooking up with an elf. He might come to terms with it eventually, but it is not this day.)

Was it the “Thorin loses his shit" part that prompted this? I hope so!

He was freaking out at the thought of Legolas and Gimli being friends, so once they actually express their feelings and consummate their relationship... Thorin will nearbought die a second time.

I actually caught up a little earlier and shit, I never would've expected Thorin to be the one to rat out Gimli about his feelings for Legolas. And Thorin and Legolas holding a civil conversation?! Wow! I love how much Thorin grew in this fic (I'm not sure I've ever seen this much character development for him before) and adore the Bilbo/Thorin bits too. I was so pleased they finally got to talk and that Legolas and Gimli are now on the same page. This fic makes me so happy.

I almost wish I hadn't caught up because now there's nothing to read! I don't know how often the author updates but this fic has reminded me of how awesome and also painful WIP's can be.

Between this and the sequel to Nothing Gold Can Stay (an incredible Bagginshield AU) idk what to do with myself.

OOoh, what kind of AU? Like a modern AU? Or just a canon divergence AU? I tend to like the latter more than the former for Tolkien.

Yea, I typically like canon AU's more too with Tolkien but I will read certain modern AU's as long as they're well written. I tend to start on those when I feel like I've read all the Canon divergent stuff.

But it is a modern AU where Thorin is King of Erebor and Gandalf secures Bilbo a position as young Kili and Fili's tutors. As you can imagine it turns into a bit more than that, but it was beautifully written and such a tense adventure. You might not like it since it's so far removed from canon, but I was dying to finish, haha.

http://archiveofourown.org/works/1047210/chapters/2094253 here it is! I might have swooned a few times at Thorin in later chapters...

But Bilbo is fantastic and I love the way he handles Thorin. (No, not in THAT way.)
