Have to agree OP! I still think the visual effects in LOTR hold up better compared to The Hobbit. I think there was an over reliance on cg in the hobbit. Like so many times for close ups/characters with dialogue they used cg where in lotr they would have used guys in latex and prosthetics. The scene where Legolas and Thranduil interrogate that orc comes to mind...the cg orc seemed completely unneccessary, it would have looked so much better if they just used someone in prosthetics. I feel like they blew the budget/effort on Azog and Gollum because they both looked awesome but everything else was just not up to scratch.
