Asking for Confirmation

(Anonymous) 2015-02-07 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I often worry that we're too one-sided in our analysis of things and take too much on faith.

So can someone who is not committed to being opposed to SJWs confirm that this is a thing that actually happens frequently and that people think of it as counting as LBGT? Are we misinterpreting this in any way?

Queerplatonic is a thing that happens frequently

I don't think people count it as LGBT though. But adding queer in it if it's not going to count as LGBT is weird to begin with imo

The people who count it as LGBT are the ones who want it to be so they can call themselves queer.

In my experience, it usually doesn't get explicitly linked to LGBT+, and I suppose that if asked, most people who use the term "queerplatonic" would deny its connection to the LGBT+ community. However, I also think that the addition of the "queer" prefix is in itself offensive and inappropriate. There're no "buts" about it. "Queer" has always been a term pertaining to sexualities. (well, it was a slur at first, but still). It should NOT be used to describe platonic relationships of any sort. The LGBT+ folk have enough problems of their own without having to explain why it is that "queerplatonic" actually has nothing to do with queerness.

Thank you, this is correct.

ITA.

That's why it didn't make any sense to me, AND it's not appropriate to use a term that a marginalized group has had to work hard to reclaim when it doesn't apply to you.

It's a thing that happens with some frequency amongst adolescents on Tumblr who are desperate to grab some queer cred, because being asexual or heterosexual doesn't get them a seat at what they consider the cool kids' table.

It pretty much doesn't happen anywhere else.
