With Sherlock it is chiefly because the creators have repeated time and again that they have no intention of doing it, yet a subsection of fans insist on sticking their fingers in their ears going "la la la I can't hear you but I'm 100% certain you will give us canon Johnlock and anyone who doubts it is [insert insult here]".

That goes way beyond what you are describing.

Ok but the creators saying they have no intention of doing has pretty slim credibilty as an arguement. They intentionally lie all the time, they love doing it.
