I don't think "whitewashing" in media was always a race thing, either. I thought it pertained to dumbing down controversial stuff - for example, if a movie is based on a book or a true story, and they cut or alter the really shocking stuff. Maybe I'm wrong though.

I used to be convinced "beat around the bush" originated from, err, vulgar connotations of... well. It kind of makes sense if you think about it. But one day I finally consulted google and was assured otherwise.

If you 'whitewash' a fence you can still see the wood, because whitewash is thinned down paint. So to 'whitewash' an issue is to tone it down. It's still there, just not as obvious.
