I thought "call a spade a spade" referred to cards and had nothing to do with race, and "black as the ace of spades" (which I had never heard at all until social justice internet culture) originated separately.

It's always been popular for trolls to make up problematic "true" meanings behind innocent words and phrases, even before tumblr. There's an entire Snopes subsection about it.

"Spade" really was a racial slur, though. Here it is, for example, in the middle of a list of racial slurs from the mid-70s. https://screen.yahoo.com/word-association-000000441.html
