Because that's what it is. It's the Great War. It's probably just me, but I don't like calling it WWI. It belittles it. Like it's World War Part One. It's World War: Prologue. World War Something Bigger Happened After So Let's Forget About it.

"Great" fits it so much better, because that's what it was.

Sure, but is there another name for WWII? Because calling it WWII without a WWI kind of leaves it hanging like a sequel without a prequel, like we've got some kind of Rambo movie naming convention problem with our wars.
