Oh it does get better, they got more into their stride in the second half of the first series. The main problem with Merlin is the overuse of the reset button at the end of a lot of episodes - there's a lack of continuity and you get similar themes popping up too often (there were like three series finales in a row where Arthur was angsting about his ability to be prince/king of Camelot and Merlin had to pull out the next plot device to make him believe in himself, for instance). But it's fun, and a good heap of Arthurian legend bastardised to varying degrees ;)

I'd say at least finish S1 and 2, and if you're not enjoying it before then it's definitely not for you.
