Whitewash also has some antibacterial properties, so combined with its relatively low cost and DIY preparation, it was pretty common to use it in houses, barns, etc. Not just for the lower classes, though. A rich man's dairy back then would've been whitewashed as well, because it gets the job done and a high standard of cleanliness was important in a dairy. But as yesterday's confusion proved, a LOT of people have no idea that whitewash was a literal thing that gave rise to the term, which later gave rise to the concept of racial whitewashing.

I was an adult before I realized that the 'spade' in "call a spade a spade' wasn't referring to the garden tool. Even then, I didn't realize it had a racial connotation either, because I'd never heard the 'black as the ace of spades' saying.

But it IS referring to the garden tool. Look up a couple subthreads.
