I used to think that the devil did win, in a sneaky roundabout way, as he often does.

Johnny deals with the devil out of pride ("I'm the best there's ever been!") and probably greed too, and those are both deadly sins. Johnny's soul belongs to the devil either way, whether he wins or loses.

(I know there's a sequel song where he's still okay. I just liked this old theory.)

I make that same argument with my father - especially since, as you pointed out, the whole pride element that Johnny just drips with when the Devil appears. Hell, Johnny himself even admits to committing a sin right there and then

"And it might be a sin, but I'll take your bet, you're going to regret, I'm the best there's ever been" [if my memory serves me in trying to recall his exact verbiage]
