I was in a very similar situation recently.

I think it is incredibly normal for people to go on a date (or several) with someone to get to know them better. Just say "let's do a date; I'm not sure I want to commit to a relationship right now, but I'd like to spend some time with you" or something. Be honest. And don't commit to something you don't want to commit to no matter how you feel about the other person - it will just hurt you both in the long run.
