they weren't that faithful to the books, which are much more like the current series.

You think so? After I saw the first season, I tried reading one of the books and couldn't get through it because it was nothing like the show I loved. I've only seen the movies once but they seemed a bit more like the books, IMO. Maybe I didn't try reading the best example.
