It's not "queer", though, if it has nothing to do with a person's gender or sexuality, or if it's between heterosexual cis people. "Platonic life partner" would cover it. "Platonic" refers to the nature of the relationship. "Queer" refers to the peoples' sexual or gender identity. And if the people involved in the relationship are queer, how does their queerness influence their friendship?

And also, "romance" is not synonymous with "long term commitment." People have LOTS of romantic relationships that last only a few weeks, a few months, a few years.

In modern days, the reason people usually choose romantic partners as their life partners is because romantic relationships are usually the most convenient ones for fulfilling a wide range of emotional needs (friend, sexual partner, co-parent).

And for centuries and millennia before that, romantic relationships were long-term commitments because they were about producing children.
