Crawmerax (and all the Borderlands raid bosses) are soloable, but how easy it depends on the character you're playing. IIRC Lilith and Mordecai don't have too much difficulty soloing Craw with a well-thought out build.

That said, raid bosses in borderlands are pretty gimmicky and not that fun, whether you're solo or in a group. I can't think of a single one that could be considered well-designed. So you're not missing much by skipping Crawmerax.

Anyway, my weekend's full of work and snow. Oh well.
