Shaving was (re)introduced to Europe when knights came back from the crusades and some of them shaved and expected their wives to do the same. So it's been around in Europe since then (and possibly earlier from the Romans- who also had the practice.)

It may not have been socially expected so rigorously like it is today, but it's been around for a long time.
