Awkward net moments

(Anonymous) 2015-02-09 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
So I got a notification on tumblr someone followed me. Unfortunately, that person happened to be my twin sister.

Thus ensued several hours of deleting personal posts, and a hasty relocation to a new blog.

Having any part of my family involved in my fandomy type online space is a massive awkward squick for me.

Any recent awkward net moments for you?

Hahaha, oh my god, anon. I'm sorry. This is awkward as hell. But at least you've realized it quickly enough to save yourself any further embarrassment?

Hah, that's hilarious. Do you think your sister was looking for fan material like fic or fanart?

None for me. I used to be vocal about being a slash while I was still a teenager... which now makes me cringe with embarrassment.

This is why I don't EVER post personal stuff on my tumblr. My friends and family don't know about my tumblr and I don't want to give them any clues!

Lol me and my twin sister follow each other and share our embarrassing fandom shit all the time.

Once I complained about my mom in Japanese on Facebook (I was living in Japan, it wasn't just a weaboo thing I swear). We were facebook friends but I thought she didn't actually know how to use it. Well... she "liked" the status. I hope she just thought she was being funny and trying to lighten things after we'd had a fight, but I'm terrified that there was a "translate" button or something and she got the meaning, and she was trying to make a point. I instantly deleted the status and learned my lesson about being passive aggressive on social networks.

Depends on when that happened. Google chrome auto-translates things automatically. It's not a perfect translation but she may have gotten the gist of it.

There's a very good reason my mom and I aren't friends on Facebook.

I once accidentally linked a friend porn (I was trying to link them a picture on tumblr, and the porn was also on tumblr, so...it was an easy mistake, okay!), but she just laughed; while embarrassing, I got over it easily enough.

I wonder how your sister found you! Maybe you guys are into the same thing? (Or she was snooping on your computer/phone and saw your account name?)

Not recent, but one time a friend posted a really fanfic I didn't really like or understand. Later on she said her account was hacked and someone posted something weird.

Me: Oh, I wondered what that "fanfic" was!

Her: ... that isn't what I was talking about.

Yeah, that pretty much killed our friendship, though it was stuff before and after as well.

This is really old actually, I'm about to date myself but remember when AOL IM used to hide windows from you? One time a friend and I were IMing with a mutual friend, and she seemingly started to ignore us. Because she was a bit of a mean girl, we assumed the worst and started asking what her deal was.

... an hour later we found the IM box hiding, and her replying all, "IM NOT IGNORUNG U!"

I once accidentally left a very personal post public because I clicked the wrong box. A random anon had to tell me too.

I was MORTIFIED. The damn thing was up publicly on LJ AND DW for DAYS. And normally I'm really fucking paranoid about that too! I still don't know how I managed to screw that up so bad.

A friend of mine once got so drunk she accidentally came out as gay to her parents via Livejournal. And she's not even gay.

I can identify with this story a little bit.

WHY WOULD YOU TELL YOUR SISTER YOUR TUMBLR EVEN EXISTS

[personal profile] chardmonster 2015-02-10 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
I keep my fandom activities (above and beyond just being geeky) on fucking lockdown, and not only because I'd be outed immediately. My family either doesn't think I have a tumblr or that it exists "because I need an account to see the site" and they're never getting a link unless I create a separate professional account.

I mean this sucks, and it's great that you don't hide your power level, but damn that scenario would wreck me. I do not want to explain Oglaf to mom.

BC WE ARE TWINS AND SHARED A LOT OF FUN THINGS WHEN WE WERE YOUNGER, AND NOW WE'RE KIND OF ESTRANGED AND SHE WAS LOOKING FOR WAYS TO CONNECT lol but no seriously, I told her several years ago after she asked, that I had a tumblr, but not what my url was. I think she was lonely bc she's been stressed and tried to friend me on something we could share together, but it backfired bc I'm sick and she's passive aggressive.

And when I was in my late teens/early 20s, my parents knew I had a lot of friends online that I hung out with. Sometimes my mom would ask me what we liked, and I would tell her, but she never looked me up on any site. I also started doing fannish stuff when I was 13, under my parents' supervision, so their curiosity about what I was doing never felt invasive.

Now that I'm older and have complete autonomy with what I do, I only ever tell my mom if I've made cool new friends who I really like.

The reason I freaked out re: my twin sister was because we established total independence when we were doing online stuff, since we did everything else together irl. It was a way of figuring out what we liked without using the other as a sounding board. Now that we're older, she's married, and we live apart, we don't have much in common irl. She misses me, and I think she wanted to reach out but didn't know how.

But I also use my tumblr sometimes to post about irl stuff that, as an adult, I decide not to tell my family about. Such as my medical conditions, or the fact that I'm asexual. Those were the reasons I didn't want my twin to see my tumblr, not because I wrote 12 pages of meta on Herbert West. I love sharing stuff like that with her, although her tastes don't match mine, lol.

I think tumblr is well-known enough that OP's sister could have discovered it all on her own. :)

I am very paranoid about family seeing fandom stuff as well, so I have a separate tumblr that is mostly animal pictures and art in case any of them ever get wind of the fact that I have knowledge of that website and ask for my URL.

Ooh one time I posted something on facebook and commented "omfg," but then my super-religious conservative uncle comments with "what does omfg stand for?" It was the sort of thing that I genuinely couldn't tell if it was a pointed comment or just an innocent remark. But I'm not sure what to say until my brother pms me "tell him it's 'oh my flying glob.' from adventure time." and so I did, and my brother commented with the relevant youtube clip, and we managed to dodge that bullet.

Yup. I am friends on FB with a few of my fandom buddies. One of them totally outed a bunch of us in one of her comments one day. She wasn't being mean or malicious and it was friends-locked, thank God, but she mentioned our fandom names in conjunction with our actual names and omg, I CRINGED. Like I EVER need my brother or nephew saying to me, "so I Googled you and found some of your porn...."
